Thread to discuss possible changes to our current draft pick trading system.
Voice your opinions/thoughts/ideas/musings here.
After some discussion, we'll vote as a league

I think ending all draft pick trading is a bad idea. It would make the league less interesting as each team would have less assets to trade and/or accumulate. I know some owners don't like the mass accumulation of draft picks, especially 1st rounders, but I feel if a team is willing to trade other assets for those picks, then they should be allowed to do so.

I'm in favour to keep draft pick trading. And I also can't understand the restriction on how many picks a manager can use if they've traded for them. If I've traded an asset for another asset a draft pick, why should I lose those picks if I exceed 13?
I'm also in agreement with the Marlins on it's nobody else's business as to how many 1st round picks are accumulated. He was given permission to do what he did and took adavantage of the situation. However if happens again though, I'll have no problem ramping up my beratement of the manager in question and the people who allow the situation to manifest into the ridiculousness it could be. There was absolutely no attempt to field even a team of scrubs which IMO is neglect to play against other teams.

I agree that the 13 pick max is a stupid rule. The idea was that there are only 13 rookie roster slots, so only 13 picks. But if an owner wants to carry extra rookies on their milb then they should be allowed. Of course it would only be fair to wait until next years draft to instate this rule. Reds and I are the biggest advocates as 2 teams with currently more then the 13 pick max, but we knew the rule (albeit saw it as pointless) when we acquired the picks.

Dodgers has a ton of picks as well, but that's because of me.

Leave draft picks alone....unlimited trading, acquiring first, etc
Except I do agree with dropping the restrictions on picks

I would just let draft pick trading stay the way it is

Agree with all of the above, trade away. Cigar wants a limit on 1sts but if I remember correct he has six or seven first round picks in 2010 so I don't get his argument limiting them.

We think it isn't good for the league to have the annual picks amassing binge some clubs feel is necessary. We participated a couple of years as a way of keeping up with top teams that amassed multiple picks. Thinks it's bad for the league.
And for the record, we never had that many Rd #1 picks. Three or four, tops. Then we quit doing that in the hope that other owners would also stop the overkill trading for picks.

I'm just clueless how one could say limiting tradeable assets is a good thing for the bottom clubs. If you're saying that rd 1 picks are undervalued and can be hoarded too easily...that's good for the bottom clubs. On the other hand I for instance inherited a club with a horrid farm system and was able to use my 1st rd pick in a trade to get me a top prospect and then parlay that into getting Rizzo who I believe to be a cornerstone, MLB now player for my team. Why would you limit my ability to do that?

No one is saying you can't trade smart. We are saying that clubs loading up on Rd #1 picks year after year end up burying the bottom teams. They build a strong team, amass a deep farm and for eternity they have an endless supply of talent to replenish their club from the inside. They use that deep talent to continually trade for new talent. It's an vicious cycle. Hard to break that once it's in place.
Fuck it. We are tired of trying to help out. There are always gonna be a few vocal owners who stop anything from being accomplished. Do what you want. We are out of any further discussions.

He's trying to save stupid owners from burying themselves when they trade away all their picks for no reason and have nothing to show for it 1 year later.

It's a 30 team league. I'd hope the people joining are serious. Incompetent managers should really be nipped in the bud, and booted.
I'm all for leagues being fun. But my days of playing in 12 team leagues with friends for fun are long gone. I put time into building competitive teams, spend countless hours reading up on, watching videos on prospects.....and just the way the game is evolving statistically in evaluating players.
But hey, if Joe Blow joins the league and stumbles around and is given a free pass just because he signed up and it goes unchecked, then maybe I shouldn't be in this league.
It just seems like a couple managers don't mind the warm body managers without a pulse....they just cares when their little nest gets jostled around and poked.

This is essentially just a giant rant about Royals and his system. Cigar is afraid that another team in the future can easily build a system equivalent to what Royals has right now. There are several smart owners in this league and since MiLBers are getting so much more attention than they used to get, I have a hard time seeing a team in the future build up a great MLB team while also having an elite farm. Just don't see it. And I agree with Reds' point. Moving forward we can't afford to let any incompetent and knowledgeably-challenged owners in. It's hard to do any real background check on anyone wanting to join, but at the same time we can't just let a guy join simply because he wants to. Testing his knowledge somewhat and his commitment to the league are some general things that can be done to make sure the guy isn't going to be some slap-dick owner.

My goal is to stack my farm, plain and simple. And if other managers have a problem with me trying to do that, then I give a big GFY to them.

Its odd managers are quiet when other managers neglect their teams and are absent for months on end, but when someone suggests adding in a stat category to acknowledge 2B' & 3B's hitters, they defend the status quo to their death because they've built their team around the JP Arencibia type player (HR's, singles & no walks) and somehow the new idea is a conspiracy to make the Royals the most dominant Fantasy Team in Human History.
It's a very interesting narrative.

With all due respect, I think you'll find we have 10 owners that will voice their opinion and 20 that won't, no matter what you want to do.

I understand that dynamic. I just find it frustrating when you have significant issues like absentee managers and some managers are oblivious. But you suggest something small, and shit goes to hell in a handbasket for them.
