Can i eliminate him from my roster now with his pending retirement or do i have to wait? If i must keep him, can i at least knock his salary down to 1M? I'd like to make a cap space based offer and with 5M to Helton and 5M to David Murphy, and 8M to Chris Young bloating my cap space when all three are either retiring or getting a fraction of their current salary I'd really like to do something.

They stay at their 2013 salary until they sign a new contract. You are more than welcome to drop him if you want to clear cap but the penalty applies to the end of the 2014 season unless :
1. You owned him for the full 2013 season, or
2. He retires, in which case there are no penalties for dropping retired players or players that move to Japan.

I feel your pain, in have Konerko still at $13M. He will either retire or sign a much cheaper contract but I have to carry him at 2013 price until one of those happens.
