Astros Invalid roster

It was mentioned in the chat but I think the issue needs to be mentioned in its own thread as well.  Despite being notified of it thru his audit before the season, Astros kept Dan Straily on his roster all season though he was traded to Marlins in August of 2016.  Because they are in different leagues, both owners were able to roster Straily for the entire season.  Although I do believe this to be an oversight on Astros part, it is a pretty large oversight.  I know it was mentioned on chat that he should be removed from league, but if that is too harsh, which it may be, I suggest stripping away his 2018 1st round draft pick as an alternative.....

Leave the teams assets alone. It's time to replace him. Just kick him off TPB and ESPN

When I inquired about a trade recently. He wasn't interested in the trade. But also said he hadn't been on in a couple weeks because he'd lost interest in the league knowing he wasn't going to make the playoffs.

Also never really interested in the 3 drafts we've had.

This x1000. For a team with little future assets, I don't see any benefit in stripping in him of any upper echelon picks.

I'd propose taking his 2018 2nd rounder if he isn't booted, but fully support finding a replacement and leaving his assets intact.

Let Andrew or Tim talk to him, sounds like he may resign away. No reason to have another knee-jerk reaction. If he wants to stay another year give him the opportunity. Maybe a situation will change that we don't know about. Who knows?

Here's the reasoning I told Andrew (Cards) on why I left Straily on my roster... not justifying the huge oversight, I wanted to provide why I left him on. "When the audit was completed by you at the beginning of the season, I thought you meant to change Dan Straily's team from HOU to MIA, which he was playing for the real Miami team this year. I completely forgot that I traded him to Chris (Miami) towards the end of 2016, thus not realizing you meant remove him from my roster because he was on Chris' team."


As for the inactivity, I don't feel like I've been as active as other owners in the league, however I also feel like I haven't been "inactive" over the last three years. I enjoy trading in the late offseason and early major league season, but usually let my team stand pat towards the last half of the major league baseball. For the drafts, I enjoy trading higher level picks for current assets, and leaving the lower picks for rebuilding the minor league system.

For the last month plus, I've been recently laid off, so I don't have the same opportunity to be sitting in front of a computer every day, checking the message boards during breaks. During the last couple months, I've been traveling a lot too, spending more time with friends during the week and weekend.


I understand if the majority would like an owner that is more active in the league, and am comfortable resigning if that's really the consensus; however I've really enjoyed all of the years I've spent on here with you all, so I'm not really sure if I personally want to move on.

One issue is he actually wasn't notified that he no longer owned Straily.  Just that Straily was on a different MLB team.  The audit process most likely failed in this instant or Tim had an oversight of the trade.  Ultimately though, it falls back on the owner.

I'm hesitant to come up with a solution other than removal solely because I'm in the division with him and don't want the appearance of impropriety. There HAS to be a penalty of some sort. I don't want to boot someone who is getting there ass kicked irl and had an oversight in a free baseball league, but there are people that spend quite a bit of time working on their teams. If we go the mercy route, this should be a one time allowance. Any further problems result in immediate dismissal. Instead of penalizing by draft picks or some arb reason, maybe don't allow him to make the playoffs next year if he is in line? Perhaps that's not sufficient?

I will also be fine with replacement. Let's get this solved now.

This whole situation is really tricky because this 1) this isn't a money league so we can penalize him there and 2) penalizing him draft picks just hurts his team and if now/down the road we have to replace him he won't have much if anything in his minors. Forcing him to drop someone doesn't make sense. I'm really torn. I get people get busy with their lives but all it takes is an email/post on here saying so. Hell when J's mom was going through that really rough time he let us all know so we could cut him some slack because this is a FREE league. I'm not even saying Astros had to be on everyday but at least once/twice a week just to respond to PMs would have been nice even if he didn't make any roster moves. That doesn't take much time IMO. I think we really only have one realistic route we can take because this is a free league.

If we don't want to boot and don't want to hurt his team long term, what about a cap penalty for 2018? From a league admin perspective it would be handled like a penalty for dropping a player and it wouldn't impact the future prospect pipeline for the team.

I'd still lean towards taking a non-1st round pick with the argument being that it's basically as if he traded for a 1 year rental.

My view is that he loses his 1st round pick but stays in league. If he leaves the league for any reason, his replacement gets a 1st round pick in that same position in the next draft, thus not harming the team long term

This is why we need a #1 who isn't scared to grab his sack and make a decision.

If it was me making the decision, Astros gets the boot a long time ago. It's a competitive and active league, and I'd rather push for more of that than keep somebody around bc they like it sometimes and the rest of the time they like neglecting their roster, league, etc.

I've been talking to Tim about this over the last couple of weeks, mainly waiting to hear from Astros to get an understanding of what happened and why.

I think Astros explanation is fair and reasonable. This is not a money league and, with all due respect, if this league is your no.1 priority in life then you need to take a look at your life.

A learning for audits going forward would be that we need to check ESPN rosters as well as Google drive and Proboards. Probably also another reason to move over to Fantrax where we can have all 30 teams in one league then the guy receiving the player in a trade will make 100% certain that the trade gets processed on both sides.

Given we just let Phillies off scot free for deliberately losing, Tim and I are not inclined to boot Astros and certainly not inclined to hand down a hefty penalty. Whilst Astros is not the most active owner in this league, he has been a good serviceable owner for 5 years now.

I was going to wait until the new Leadership group is formed but seeing there is a push to finalise this immediately we will strip Astros of his 2018 3rd round pick. As a top 100 pick (probs pick #75) it is a hard penalty but one that reflects that this could have been an honest mistake.

Disagree with your decision, but at least we aren't dragging our feet. Just wait until next year like we did with Giants.
