Not sure how we handle this situation, so looking for guidance.
Brandon Crawford is on a $13M TPB deal. His MLB contract runs through the end of this season.
He just signed an extension (Cots shows as a different contract) covering '22-'23.
Since the new contract doesn't go into effect until the '22 season, is he still on his $13M TPB contract right now, or does he bump up to his $15M actual salary right now?
Per Cots:
Brandon Crawford ss
6 years/$75M (2016-21)
2 years/$32M (2022-23)
2 years/$32M (2022-23)
signed extension with San Francisco 8/13/21
22:$16M, 23:$16M
6 years/$75M (2016-21)
signed extension with San Francisco 11/17/15
$1.2M signing bonus
16:$5.8M, 17:$8M, 18-21:$15M annually
full no-trade protection

It's a good question. And a good scenario to add to the Rules.
IMO, his new contract he signed IRL would commence in 2022. The reason is because the terms of the contract he's currently on didn't change for 2021 So at the end of the TPB Season/MLB Regular season his new contract would be his contract going forward and the TPB contract would no longer exist.

I don't think you'll get any argument against that interpretation. I would say he's at the TPB contract until his new deal comes into effect whether he signs that deal during or after the season.

Seconded. And +1 on adding to the rules as a point of reference.
