A quick sigh at the instant and overwhelming vote for inflation relief but zero interest in addressing it longterm. See y'all next year for more of the same! What's wrong with assessing the cap increase every year?

Well, for those of us who like to/have to plan ahead every offseason down to the dollar to squeeze just under cap it's a big curveball two months in (three last year). Not the end of the world, I just think it would be smarter and easy to plan ahead because inflation isn't going away. Or at least try to address it at the start of the offseason.

I still am of the opinion that it balances out. I don't acquire players that are going to reprice and get expensive in the offseason because I know that I won't be able to control it. I don't have a problem with there being more players on TPB contracts. Agreed

Yeah, we should start assessing this at the end of our season

I'm not really sure that's a fair interpretation of the poll results. Remember, we only had two options: Increasing by $5M now or waiting to address the whole thing in 2016. I, like many cap strapped teams, elected for the immediate relief. Actually that isn't quite true: I voted inadvertently for the Cap increase while trying to figure out how to vote. Most likely, had I known ho to vote, I would have voted for that anyway, however, that doesn't mean I wouldn't be more than happy to do both. Both wasn't an option.

Oh, and had I known the question was coming up, I might not have been so quick to drop Jake Peavy for Cap relief. Not saying it definitely wouldn't have happened, merely that it wasn't a foregone conclusion.

I think making this in November allowed it to be early enough. Some of the, if not most of the, cap dropping moves were going to be necessary by teams anyway.

Time to resurrect this thread. When are we looking at cap inflation adjustments this year?

I understand that, and I wouldn't expect it to be a huge bump like that just saying that it appears there was (and still is) confusion around if this was a 1 time thing or if it's something to address each offseason. Figured better to start the initial talks now vs. waiting for November. Personally I see it as something we could calculate the adjustment for at the conclusion on MLB's regular season when we have final salary numbers from across MLB.

I vote yearly to keep up with MLB salaries. If you can project upcoming salary increases and come up with a suggested bump, feel free.

I just spent 15 - 20 min going through Cot's opening day payrolls from 2015 and 2016 and aggregated it for all MLB teams.
In 2015 opening day MLB payrolls averaged $125.3M In 2016 open day MLB payrolls averaged $130.1M
Yay for new TV money I guess.
I can do the same analysis once end of year numbers come in once the season is over, but I'd expect something in the $5M range based on the opening day payroll increase year over year.

I vote yearly to keep up with MLB salaries. If you can project upcoming salary increases and come up with a suggested bump, feel free. Agree. It only makes sense to keep up with salaries. I think predicting the future is near impossible but info like posted above shows annual increase and I'm happy to use that as a guideline.

I'd say keep it simple. Since we can calculate the increase/decrease in Opening Day Salaries pretty easily (I realize it takes time and effort -- thanks, KC -- but it isn't hard), whatever the increase at the beginning of each season, rounded to the nearest million, gets added at the beginning of the next season.
I'd stay away from applying any decrease, although if there is a decrease, any future increases should not be added until the decrease is covered.

I don't mind owning the calculation effort, as I said before it was only 15-20 minutes of tedious effort. I like using opening day salaries, one of the benefits is that within a week of opening day 2017, you'll be able to know where cap will land for 2018.
I wouldn't be opposed to applying a cap decrease given the notice period that would be involved (and how much easier it would be to track), but I understand taking the social security approach of not applying decreases and wouldn't fight that decision. I'll just have to find a place to make a note so I remember when doing the calculation, not a big deal for me I guess.

Actually after thinking about it a bit, we should really make a decision before the 2016 drop deadline passes.
